I really, really appreciate this article. I agree with you, however, I think the issue is a little more nuanced than you’re letting on. There are two key things wrong with this video that I agree with you on: 1. The false equivalency of these views and 2. the idea that marginalized people have to be patient with transgressions from bigoted people. The second one is obviously more important than the first. While I agree with you that too many people are quickly championing this video that is already downright awful for commodifying important causes in the interest of a corporation, what gets ignored in this conversation is the simple reality that prejudice can be a never ending cycle the way being oppressed can. That’s not to say one isn’t way worse than the other and shouldn’t be an excuse for change, but it’s pretty easy to tell (or maybe I have the privilege of being able to do that).
If you look at the definition of racism, which isn’t brought up in this video, many white people don’t understand that racism and prejudice aren’t the same thing. A commenter even falsely claimed you were racist toward white people. I don’t have to tell you what racism is, because, of course you know. (I’m already doing enough whitesplaining in this comment.) The reason these people don’t know this is often because they are raised or isolated in a certain way from society. This is not an excuse, but let me ask you this, how are they supposed to change, if not by having that one starting conversation? That is the surface-level point of this video besides “drink Heineken”. Should marginalized communities have suffer through this? No. Should privileged persons be allies in these situations? Yes.
It’s incredibly frustrating that people think the right to freedom of speech also gives them the right to validation. False equivalencies like the climate change vignette are CNN-level bullshit. But how does the change happen? The oppressors in this video need it, because they are just not there yet.
All of this being said, I don’t want my comment to take away from your broader points, which are totally 100% valid, not that you need my approval.
